A data engineer in 2026 costs anywhere from about $22 an hour to more than €100, depending on the country and the type of contract. The low end is what the median data engineer in Ukraine takes home. The high end is a US employee once benefits are included, or a freelancer in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
All figures below come from public salary and contract data, linked at the end. Where a source gives an annual salary, we divide it by 2,080 hours (40 hours a week for 52 weeks), which is the usual conversion. People don't work all 2,080 of those hours once holidays and sick days come out, so the real cost per productive hour is higher than the numbers here.
United States
Indeed puts the average base salary for a data engineer at $136,543 a year, from 10,900 salaries in job postings over the past three years (updated 29 October 2026). The range runs from $88,062 to $211,715.
That base works out to about $66 an hour. Employers pay more than the salary, though. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that for management, professional and related jobs in private industry, wages make up 68.5% of what employers spend on compensation (June 2026). Benefits such as health insurance, paid leave and retirement plans account for the remaining 31.5%.
Scaled up by that ratio, a $136,543 engineer costs the employer around $199,000 a year, or about $96 an hour. That still leaves out recruiting fees and the weeks it takes to hire.
United Kingdom
The UK has good public data for both permanent and contract roles, thanks to ITJobsWatch, which tracks job ads. For the six months to 2 November 2026:
- The median permanent salary for a data engineer was £70,000 (£80,000 in London), from 1,525 quoted salaries.
- The median contractor day rate was £500 (£531 in London), from 1,260 quoted rates. The middle half of the market sits between £425 and £600 a day.
An employee on £70,000 also costs the employer 15% National Insurance on earnings above £5,000 a year, which is £9,750. With that added, the total is £79,750, or about £38 an hour, before a workplace pension contribution of at least 3% of qualifying earnings.
A contractor at £500 for a day of eight hours charges about £63 an hour. That looks expensive next to £38. The contractor covers their own tax and pension, though, isn't paid for holidays, and can be let go without a notice period or a redundancy process.
Germany and the DACH region
Indeed's average base salary for a data engineer in Germany is €72,126 a year, from 660 salaries in postings (updated 28 October 2026). Advertised salaries range from €49,842 to €104,373, and Stuttgart has the highest city average at €91,042.
On base salary alone that is about €35 an hour. German employers also pay roughly half of the employee's pension, health, unemployment and care insurance on top of it. We haven't put a single number on that here because the rates vary by health fund, but the true cost is noticeably higher than €35.
Freelancers charge a lot more. freelancermap's 2026 survey of freelancers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland found an average hourly rate of €103. It's an average across every specialty on the platform, so read it as a rough guide for data engineering.
Ukraine and Eastern Europe
DOU, the main Ukrainian developer community, runs regular salary surveys. In its summer 2026 report, the median data engineer earned $3,780 a month after tax. The data part of the survey had 350 respondents across data science, data engineering, ML and AI.
That is about $45,000 a year, or about $22 an hour after tax. Team leads in data engineering earn more: the upper quartile for that group is $6,750 a month, or about $39 an hour.
A client pays more than this for the same engineer. Companies that place Eastern European engineers add their own costs and margin on top of what the engineer earns.
We wanted Polish figures here too, but the public salary reports we could open didn't break out data engineers, so Poland isn't in this article.
Rates side by side
| Option | Per hour | Source figure |
|---|---|---|
| US employee, base salary | ~$66 | $136,543 a year |
| US employee, with benefits | ~$96 | Base ÷ 68.5% |
| UK employee, with employer NI | ~£38 | £70,000 + £9,750 |
| UK contractor | ~£63 | £500 a day |
| Germany employee, base salary | ~€35 | €72,126 a year |
| DACH freelancer (all fields) | €103 | €103 an hour |
| Ukraine, engineer's pay after tax | ~$22 | $3,780 a month |
Each figure stays in its source's currency, which makes it easier to check against the source and keeps it from going stale when exchange rates move.
What the hourly figure leaves out
A permanent hire can take weeks or months, from the first job ad to a signed offer and then the candidate's notice period. Nobody builds your pipelines in the meantime. Once they start, you pay for every working day, including the quiet weeks between projects, while a contractor bills for the time you book. And if the hire doesn't work out, ending a permanent contract in the UK or Germany means a notice period and sometimes severance, usually after you've already paid for several months.
Seniority and stack matter more than the rate. An engineer who has already run Databricks or Snowflake in production skips the learning curve you'd otherwise pay for, so compare rates for the same level and the same tools.
Time zone is the one people forget. If your working days overlap by half a day, questions get answered the same day. With no overlap, each question can cost you a day.
Where Datarob fits
Datarob places data engineers inside client teams. Our rates start from €20 an hour and depend on seniority and stack. The senior engineers whose CVs we show on the site are €50 an hour. You pay monthly, there are no upfront fees, and if an engineer isn't a fit we replace them within 2 weeks at no extra cost.
Most of our engineers work in or near European time zones. You can see who's available now, or look at the pages for Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI and AI engineers.
